In one of the deadliest traffic accidents in the history of the territory, a four-wheel drive and a road train crashed on a highway south of Darwin, killing six persons.
On Friday, the two cars collided on the Stuart Highway close to Pine Creek in the Katherine before catching fire.
According to police, efforts are being made to identify the six individuals and notify their families.
The large vehicle’s driver and passenger received non-life threatening medical attention.
Brendan Lindner, a senior detective with the Northern Territory Police, described the crash as “confronting” to first responders.
“I would like to commend the work of all those involved in this tragic incident, including those first on the scene who quickly contacted emergency services,” stated Lindner.
On Northern Territory roads so far this year, 19 people have perished.
