Due to their alleged involvement in a criminal organisation, two delivery drivers have been detained in Sydney.
According to allegations, the two individuals used their authority as delivery drivers improperly to facilitate the importation and distribution of illegal tobacco products.
The Australian Border Force has made information regarding the arrests from August 28 public.
On August 28 and 29, ABF officers executed 37 search warrants in Silverwater, Hillsdale, Prestons, Botany, Enfield, and East Gardens.
Officers confiscated 1.5 million illegal cigarettes worth over $1.7 million in avoided duties, 1.2 tonnes of molasses tobacco worth approximately $1.9 million in evaded duties, and more than $300,000 in cash throughout the course of the two-day operation.
Additionally, a number of electronic gadgets were discovered, and they will be further investigated.
Bail was denied for the two men, who will now appear in court on this Wednesday, September 13.
ABF Commander Raef McDonough stated that “illicit tobacco profits are frequently linked to drug trafficking and money laundering, further lining the pockets of criminal syndicates while our communities struggle under cost of living pressures.”
