A 24-year-old male from South Australia’s south-east is one of five men police think raped a woman in Adelaide’s west in June, according to a court hearing.
The guy appeared in Mount Gambier Magistrates Court this afternoon, but his identity was withheld to avoid revealing the final of five persons wanted by police.
On June 24, special crimes investigators detained a 27-year-old male, a 22-year-old guy from Adelaide’s west, and a 22-year-old man from Victoria in connection with the alleged rape.
The 24-year-old is the fourth individual arrested in connection with the alleged event.
“Naming him may jeopardise the investigation into the outstanding defendant,” Magistrate Koula Kossiavelos warned the court.
Before appearing in court this afternoon, the 24-year-old guy was detained in Naracoorte and refused police bail.
The accused man sought for bail during the hearing, and the court ordered a home detention report ahead of his next appearance in a week.
“That doesn’t mean I’m going to grant bail,” Magistrate Kossiavelos remarked.
The rape, according to police, occurred on June 18 in Adelaide’s western suburbs.
The Special Crimes Investigation Unit, according to Detective Chief Inspector Matthew Lyons, will continue to investigate the alleged rape.
“Sexual assaults can have both short-term and long-term traumatic effects on victims,” Mr Lyons explained.
“We will continue to work tirelessly to resolve these alleged crimes.”
In September, the three other defendants and the newly charged guy will appear in Adelaide Magistrates Court together.
