The black box of the chopper that crashed during a military exercise, killing four people, has been retrieved by a naval diving team.
The MRH-90 Taipan helicopter crashed off the Queensland coast on July 28 during Exercise Talisman Sabre, killing Captain Danniel Lyon, Lieutenant Maxwell Nugent, Warrant Officer Class Two Joseph Laycock, and Corporal Alexander Naggs.
The black box discovered on Monday contains critical audio and flight data that could throw light on what led the chopper to crash.
Lieutenant General Greg Bilton, the Australian Defence Force’s chief of joint operations, stated that all contacts were normal until the chopper crashed.
The defence officials stated that collecting the wreckage was still challenging and arduous, and that the goal was to return the soldiers’ remains to their families.
The Queensland coroner has turned the found wreckage, including the black box, to the defence department to aid the Defence Flight Safety Bureau’s investigation.
