Police have disclosed that a 53-year-old man who was shot dead while walking along a Melbourne street near a well-known nightlife district was connected to organised crime.
Crime Command Detective Superintendent Geri Porter has confirmed that the shooting on Almeida Crescent in South Yarra around 11.40pm yesterday was a “targeted attack” on the man, who lived in the neighbourhood. Porter said the victim was with another man and had just left the gym when he was shot at several times.
He had serious wounds and passed away en route to the hospital.
Porter stated that police felt the shooting was connected to a car found burnt in Rowville today and that the man who was with the victim at the time of the incident had since been refusing to supply them with information.
She reminded Victorians that there were no concerns to their safety in general following the shooting and urged anyone with information to contact police.
“This wasn’t a random attack,” she declared.
The general public “has no concerns at this time.”
Police have blocked off the area while they search the crime scene for clues.
