The family of an old man who was killed along with his dog after being struck by a car in Melbourne’s south-east is inconsolable.
Just after 7.30 p.m. on Wednesday, Toni Jensen, 87, and his dog Rusty were struck by a Toyota Crusier at the intersection of Heatherton and Power roads in Endeavour Hills. They were only a few yards from their home.
The vehicle instantly stopped to assist the 87-year-old, but he tragically passed away at the spot along with his dog.
The great-grandfather reportedly followed the same morning and evening path, according to his neighbours.
When he was slain, he was only a few metres from a pedestrian crossing.
I looked back and noticed the man standing in the road. He was being looked after by a few people, according to local resident Harpretgill.
The driver, a 37-year-old man from Endeavour Hills, is cooperating with police, according to Detective Sergeant Peter Romanis.
“The Major Crash Investigation Unit is looking at all avenues of enquiries and are working to piece together what has gone on here,” he stated.
“The driver is assisting police, and we’re trying to figure out how this tragedy happened,” the driver said.
Everyone has a duty to keep Victorian roadways safe, according to Romanis.
“This is a tragic reminder for all users to drive to the conditions, be aware of your surroundings, and be aware of vulnerable road users,” he said.
“Whenever possible, we want to keep situations like this from occurring.”
The driver was released awaiting additional investigations.
Police are asking anyone with information about the crash or dashcam video to come forward.
