During a four-day police sweep, hundreds of the most violent domestic violence offenders in New South Wales were detained and charged.
Throughout the entire state, Operation Amarok II took place from last Wednesday to last Saturday and resulted in the arrest of 644 persons, 314 of whom were among the highest-risk DV offenders in NSW according to the police.
The majority (164) of those 314 had outstanding warrants for violent offenses.
Police and Counter-Terrorism Minister Yasmin Catley stated that the NSW government would continue to adopt a more comprehensive approach to addressing domestic violence so that anyone who committed these crimes may anticipate police intervention.
“The figures following Amarok II speak for themselves – 644 arrested and charged with serious offenses – and show that police are making progress every day to confront the complicated issue of domestic abuse.
“The NSW government will support police to address domestic violence from all angles – from victim support, varied reporting options, and educating the public, to operations like Amarok which target the most violent offenders,” said a spokesperson for the department.
Following the operation’s arrests, 1108 charges were filed, covering a variety of offenses including narcotics possession and distribution, possession of a restricted weapon or firearm, and domestic abuse.
According to NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb, lowering the risk of harm experienced by domestic violence victims is still a top focus.
“Perpetrators are on notice,” she added. “The Amarok arm of our strategy focuses on them, including assessing their intent, their capacity to cause harm, and the access they have to their current or future victims.”
“To target dangerous domestic violence offending and protect our communities, we will continue proactive Amarok deployments along with the application of a sophisticated suite of strategies.”
Police served 460 overdue domestic violence orders (ADVOs) throughout the four-day operation and submitted 326 applications for orders that had been apprehended. Combined compliance inspections for bail and ADVOs totaled more than 500.
Over the course of the four days, police also seized 45 illegal weapons and 23 guns.
