In Campbelltown, in Sydney’s southwest, a 29-year-old paramedic lost his life after being stabbed outside a fast food establishment.
Around 5:30 this morning, the man’s coworkers triggered a duress alarm, which prompted police to be dispatched to the McDonald’s on Queen Street.
The male paramedic received treatment on-site before being taken urgently to Liverpool Hospital, where he sadly passed away, according to authorities.
After working all night, the paramedics were enjoying a break at the restaurant, according to NSW Ambulance.
Police detained a male, age 21, there and then.
The man’s death, according to NSW Ambulance Commissioner Dominic Morgan, was a heartbreaking loss.
He said, “You can understand this is a really trying time for his young family and the NSW Ambulance family as a whole.
“I had the honor of meeting with his mother, father, wife, and sister, all of whom are, as you can guess, inconsolable following this awful loss.
“It’s very difficult for me to comprehend how anyone simply going to work to do their job, let alone a paramedic who puts themselves in danger, can not return home is a tragedy and almost inconceivable to work through on any level,” the author said.
Susan Pearce, the secretary for health in NSW, sobbed as she paid tribute to the man and his paramedic crew.
“The health system is one big family, and we find it incomprehensible to lose someone in this way.”
Chris Minns, the premier, praised the paramedic and other EMS personnel.
“Our hearts go out to him and his family as well as all paramedics across New South Wales,” he said.
“I say to all New South Wales paramedics today, who after hearing this news put on their paramedic uniform and serve the people of New South Wales—thank you for your dedication.”
It was a “profound tragedy,” according to Gerard Hayes, secretary of the Health Services Union of NSW.
We offer the family and coworkers of this young paramedic our sincere grief and assistance, he said.
At-scene arrest of a man carrying a knife
Police asked anyone with information to contact them after saying the man who was arrested on the spot had been seen driving about early this morning between Ingleburn and Campbelltown in a blue Honda Jazz sedan.
He was brought to Campbelltown Police Station, where he was interrogated, according to NSW Police Deputy Commissioner Mal Lanyon.
“A 21-year-old Raby man who was carrying a knife confronted police upon arrival,” said Commissioner Lanyon.
“Police were forced to use a taser to assist the paramedics on the scene and subsequently arrested that 21-year-old male.”
Police have set up a crime scene in the restaurant parking lot, with police tape enclosing two ambulances and clothing and shoes all over the place.
In order to shield potential evidence from the rain, temporary shelters have been placed up. One ambulance’s front has a tarp over it.
Police personnel on the scene warned onlookers to stay away from the area and announced that the McDonald’s was closed.
Leanne, a bystander Cameron claimed that the assault had stunned her.
Disgusting, they’re here to help us, the paramedics, she said.
