Overnight, two separate car accidents in Victoria resulted in two fatalities and three further injuries.
A 16-year-old male passenger from Montrose was killed when a car exploded on Edward Road at Chirnside Park at 2:50 a.m. after hitting two parked cars.
The car’s 16-year-old driver from Chirnside Park and another 16-year-old male passenger from Mooroolbark were both taken to the hospital with significant but not life-threatening injuries, where they are still being treated.
Witnesses and police officers had to remove them from the vehicle.
Around 12:15 a.m., the automobile she was riding in collided with a tree on the Old Princess Highway in Beconsfield, killing another passenger.
A male passenger was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries while the woman passed away at the spot.
The 30-year-old motorist was taken into custody on the spot and is cooperating law enforcement.
Authorities are still looking into how the two collisions happened and have urged anyone with information to contact them.
